His Life

Raymond Yiu was born in Hong Kong, he began learning the piano at the age of four, and he moved to the UK in 1990. He originally trained as an engineer, and was an autodidact until he undertook his doctorate in composition under the supervision of Julian Anderson at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2009.

His music has been performed, broadcast and enjoyed all around the world, and he has worked with ensembles and artists including the BBC Singers, BBC Philharmonic, Chroma, Concorde Ensemble, Ensemble 10/10, London Sinfonietta, Lontano Ensemble, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne and the Hong Kong Philharmonic.

His Work

His first major stage work “The Original Chinese Conjuror” was commissioned for the 2006 Aldeburgh Festival, and has since been produced by the Musikverein, Vienna in 2013 and the Northern Opera Group, Leeds in 2018.

His 2009 quintet for piano and traditional Chinese instruments “Maomao Yü” was commissioned by the London Symphony Orchestra for Lang Lang and the Silk String Quartet, and his large-scale work “Symphony” was commissioned by the BBC, and premiered by countertenor Andrew Watts, the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Edward Gardner during the BBC Proms 2015.

The 2018 London premiere of “The World Was Once All Miracle” was performed by baritone Roderick Williams, The BBC Symphony Orchestra and Sir Andrew Davis, and the work was nominated for a Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award, and his 2020 chamber work “Corner of a Foreign Field”, written to commemorate the Chinese Labour Corps of World War I, was also shortlisted for a Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award.

Raymond Yiu’s music is a wonderful synthesis of both modern and ancient Chinese Music combined with a whole gambit of Western Music. Not only does he strive to incorporate and blend all sorts of different styles and genres in his music, but he also tries to blur the boundaries between different art forms.
