Secular children’s choirs first came about in the 19th century, through the movement to bring music to schools, and the 20th century saw the development of many different types children’s and youth choirs. Browse our sheet music and scores, and explore all the wonderful choral repertoire for young singers with Stretta Music today!
Although secular children’s and youth choirs are relatively young, the boys’ choir stems back to the Middle Ages. Boy’s choirs are synonymous with sacred music, and boys’ voices were heard in churches all around the world for centuries. In stark contrast, girls and ladies were not allowed to sing in public until well into the 19th century.
Children’s choirs also play an important role in opera. Most opera houses have their own children’s choir, and they feature in many works, including Hansel & Gretel, Carmen and Tosca.
