Concert Bands first emerged at the end of the 18th century, and evolved primarily from military music. The Concert Band (sometimes known as the ’wind band’) is the most common form of mixed woodwind & brass band around the world. Concert Bands have a ’harmony line-up’, and consist of the woodwind and brass players who normally make up the wind sections of the symphony orchestra. Nowadays, however, the usual line-up has been expanded, and also includes saxophone, euphonium, tuba, double bass and drums.
Up until the second half of the 20th century, there were still few original compositions for Concert Band, and mainly symphonic arrangements were played. Since then, a lot has changed, and many composers have composed for Concert Band, and the most important composers include Johan de Meij, Philip Sparke, Bert Appermont, Jacob de Haan, Thomas Doss and Jan Van der Roost.
