Although Hymn at Twilight particularly describes the uncertainty of the approaching night and an evening prayer, it is actually about human feelings such as doubt, uncertainty, hope and determination. The solemn piece begins quietly and introduces a recurring four-part ascending figure. Optimism, fear and resignation alternate, with the flute taking centre stage. Brass and woodwinds take up the chorale. The piece ends with a feeling of optimism.
