The trombone is the tenor voice of the brass family, and, along with the violin, is one of the oldest orchestral instruments that can be played fully chromatically. As early as the Renaissance, the trombone frequently featured in orchestral and chamber music, and moving into the classical period, composers such as W.A. Mozart wrote more and more important parts for the trombone. It was in Symphony No.5 by Beethoven, that the romantic, symphonic master first truly explored the trombone, and it was from this point forward, that the orchestra employed two tenor trombones and a bass trombone, which is the standard for orchestras today. In the mid-19th century, some of the most important Concertos for Trombone were written, particularly by composers like Ferdinand David and Ernst Sachse.
The trombone is not only used in classical music, it is also features in all kinds musical styles, including pop, swing, jazz and more... who doesn’t know the Jazz Trombone legend Glenn Miller?
